life drawing

This drawing was done with a pencil taped to the end of a willow stick...

Contouring-
Contour drawing, is an artistic technique used in the field of art in which the artist sketches the contour of a subject by drawing lines that result in a drawing that is essentially an outline; the French word contour meaning, “outline.” The purpose of contour drawing is to emphasize the mass and volume of the subject rather than the detail. The focus is on the outlined shape of the subject and not the minor details. However, because contour can convey a three-dimensional perspective, length and width as well as thickness and depth are important; not all contours exist along the outlines of a subject. This technique is manifested in different styles and practiced in the honor of drawing development.I found this on a website called Deviantart by a woman named Kastanada and I thought it showed a good example of contouring, showing the shape and form by using the contour technique,a specific way of how to create the lines, edges.highlights and shadows to make it look 3d,rounded and more realistic.

Frank Auerbach
Focused on the highlights and angles.

Alberto Giacometti
 unique contour lines.

Sculpture work by Giacometti

Looking at sculpture and doing more practical work in sculpture may help with contouring in life drawing because your working on the shape, looking up close at all the features, wrinkles etc,it will bring more knowledge to my sketchwork and how the form and shape should be.

Henry moore

Very popular for his contouring and scribbles.

 Creating an illusion..

Egon shiele

A different way of contouring,by not sketching and scribbling in as much but using a simple line to create the shape and form of the body with no mistakes and shading.

Leon Kossoff
. Like fellow student Frank Auerbach, he evolved a method of painting that entailed the heavy reworking of thick impasto to try to provide a truthful rendering of people and places he knew well. Drawing is given primacy as an expression of his commitment and involvement with the subject, and painting itself is conceived as a form of drawing.
Kossoff remained remarkably consistent in his methods and in his range of subject-matter, although he gradually moved away from the earth colours and thick encrusted surfaces towards a more sparing use of paint and a wider range of brighter colours. His figure paintings are often of close friends and family members; and his pictures of nudes are often of his wife, Rosalind, or of his long-standing model Fidelma.

Reflective practice

Life drawing is something I really do enjoy as i have always been drawn to sketch, especially bodies, hands faces, eyes.I love sketching and doodling whenever i have free time.My preferred technique is scribbling sketch, shading, highlights and shadows, dark areas, realistic drawings but abstract aswell.I have a way of drawing especially in life drawing,i like to do quick, sharp lines so it has energy and movement in it.I never/cant do just slow focused lines,i prefer not to use rubbers, apart from when i want to bring out highlights in the shading.
As i am so intrigued into this,i want to learn more, and how to get better,so learning and practicing contouring today has taught me a lot and i want to do a lot more practice so i will be doing more observational drawing.
My favourite artists of the day are
Henry moore,Giacometti,and Frank Auerbach.
I need to practice on my shading, rather than just scribbling, and shading without thinking which i like to do,im going to try something different with contour, looking at something and see the angles in which it moves, thinking more about what im actually looking at rather than what i think it should look like.I think ive just been too afraid to this but if i get practice i will start getting the hang of it.
