folk couture
The thing that drew my attention the most was looking at bibhu mohapatras inspiration for folk art
which was the summer issue of 1994 folk art tattoo designs..
and came across a tattoo of a woman wearing a gorgeous fancy turban..
i then began to start making this turban and as i worked i thought about what it looked and reminded me of relating to fashion and folk art..so i began to think about fortune tellers and fairgrounds..
i want to investigate every single part of this i can..the history, the old fashioned, the new existing fashion for turbans and folk art,hat designers and fortune tellers..

from the ridiculous..
to the fashionable...
existing tattoo designs..
by this point,i was intrigued to look at different hat designers
fatima de burnay
Jean paul gaultier..
i got slightly carried away with looking at some of his amazing work.. the montreal museum of art..
also thinking about my original folk art research, the wilder man,i wanted to find some incredible hats/fascinators that are almost like a sculpture..

wilderman/hats
The wilder mann was created by photographer Charles Freger, the photographs were taken over two winters in 19 European countries. It is based on the legends and myths of the wild man and the various different forms they take in festivals that take place all across Europe.
After looking at wilderman, and the 1941 summer folk art tattoos..I progressed my work into hat making and hat fashion..
Existing hat fashion

masks
Mexican mask-folk art
making and use of masks for various traditional dances and ceremony in Mexico. Evidence of mask making in the country extends for thousands of years and was a well-established part of ritual life in Mexico when the Spanish arrived.
In class, we then made our own modroc masks and learnt how to produce them into latex masks..

Folk art fashion
Fashion has always found inspiration in unpredictable sources: art, life, history—there are no boundaries. In this spirit, the American Folk Art Museum explores the relationship between inspiration and creation. Thirteen established and emerging designers have created original ensembles inspired by artwork in the museum’s collection.
Bibhu Mohapatra
Bibhu was inspired for folk couture by a small tattoo book which was based in the late nineteenth, early twentieth century,he says.. . “The tattoo book basically is the only sort of interaction he has in the sea, which is a big vast wall of emptiness and solitude. . . . As a result, this woman appears who is a sort of loved one but also part of his reality, this vast body of water.”
Mohapatra’s delicate dress of aquamarine organza resembles waves
