Project so far -Alice in Wonderland.

At the beginning of our first session starting this project i was relieved and happy as i have seen the film and plenty of ideas came to my head.My first initial ideas were focussed more on the costume and prop side to it such as what the characters where, thinking of all the characters in the film such as the Queen of Hearts,Alice,The madhatter and Tweedle dum and Tweedle dee.Although i had a lot more ideas of what i could do with props such as the tea party with the Madhatter, the cups and cake etc,the queen of hearts roses, sawds. As the newest Alice in Wonderland film in 2010 is my favourite i was thinking about that one the most, and how everyone who lives with the queen of hearts pretend to have huge body parts so the Queen of hearts doesnt feel odd as she has a massive head,i wanted to create large noses and heads.I found a few videos on youtube of the makeup artists from the film doing the actors makeup and how they created the look on them all. Also some very interesting videos of the film set and how it was all in a green screen room. The posion Alice drinks and the cake she eats that makes her shrink and grow interested me,so that i what i made as my main focus. It actually involves and portrays drugs a lot in the film, with the posion, the talking animals, flowers,a smiling cat,all sorts that you would probably see if you were on drugs so i liked to research all about that.I was interested in the characters eyes and the colour of them, such as the madhatter and the chesire cat in the 2010 film,so i thought it would be a good idea and fun to draw/paint eyes with crazy colours in them, using different colours of ink, which also portrays being on drugs.
After thinking and planning i still had my main focus on the posion, growing really big and shrinking really small.I decided to look at the scene in the 1999 film where Alice gets stuck in the white rabbits house where she eats the cake to grows really big and gets her arm stuck in the window,i wanted to re-create that by making a house the size of a doll house so as you crawl in it feels very chlostrophobic and you feel like a giant.
Using a cardboard box i got working on it straight away, paper mashed it over to make it stronger.I then made sand and glue mixed together and layered it on top as the wall, carving little bricks in it whilst setting to make it look more effective and realistic like a brick house.I had cut out windows and made a door, not yet putting on the roof as it is too heavy and i need to figure out a way of make the douse balance on its own.So i will be looking and researching architecture, working with cardboard and how to make it function properly.I have alreayd made a maquette of the house so i could see where i was going wrong the house, what i could do to help me understand how to make the house better.I have thought about what i need to do and i have gone back to my house and mad eit better by putting archers around the window with cardboard and sand a glue mixed, and i will be making window sills aswell with the same technique.I have thought about what i will be doing next after i have finished and pictured the house.

After another brainstorm of ideas.I found a cardboard box and wondered what I could do with it.With everyones help it became a group project and we ended with an idea of "The mad hatter and his walking tea party".

start of Alice work

My first initial idea was focused on the white rabbits house. The scene where Alice drinks the posion and finds her growing so big she gets stuck in the house.I wanted to create the illusion of feeling really big,or really small.

I started to create a house, more like a doll house to make you feel like you are a giant and stuck in a normal sized when you sit in it.I haven't specifically thought of making the house exactly like the house in the film i have made it my own.I used cardboard,to make the structure stronger i paper mashed it.

I added the door by cutting it out in the cardboard and using string threading through holes in the door and the 'wall' of the house so it can open and close.Mixing sand and glue together i thought it would make a good effect if layered it all over for the wall to make it look more realistic.Whilst it was still quite wet i carved with a plastic knife some bricks into the sand and glue so when it dries it looks more like a brick wall.

After working on the house after a while and trying different things, figuring out how to do it.I decided to do a maquette to help me think about what i need to do and for more practice.Using just cardboard then decided to use the sand and glue technique for the roof of the maquette and cut bricks in to it but it was difficult as i couldnt do it when it was damp or when it had set.
I then went back to my House and made archers using cardboard strips and covering it in the sand and glue for the affect and it also sticks to the house very easily.I will also creating window sills and paint it over.
